Software application to analyse and visualise research output in the humanities and social sciences

This implementation project is based on the results of the SUC programme P-3 initiative Ressourcen-basiertes Instrument zur Abbildung geisteswissenschaftlicher Forschung am Beispiel der Theologie (Resource-based instrument to visualise research in the humanities on the example of theology). Its overarching aim is to develop a software application capable of depicting the research profile of individual scholars as well as the quality of their research findings. To date, software developed to analyse and visualise research output nearly exclusively has relied on data related to publication and citation. In addition to these traditional data sources, this implementation project plans to incorporate other selected data sources suited to enhancing the visibility of research output in the humanities and social sciences. Using the set of quality criteria for research in theology established in the aforementioned P-3 initiative, viable indicators to evaluate research output for the broader discipline will be defined and appropriate forms of visualisation will be selected. As such, the implementation project is initially closely linked to the results of the P-3 initiative and, in 2016, the software will serve to evaluate test data generated from research in theology. From the start, however, the application is designed to be adapted to specifications in other disciplines.

The software will be open source and free of charge. Users (e.g. research institutions and universities) can employ the software to evaluate and visualise their research output for internal governance purposes, but also to present their research to an external audience. They can make adjustments to the application according to their own preferences and needs, and can further develop the software. The project will be conducted at the University of Lucerne.
